Monobloco is one of the best known Brazilian Carnival blocks in Rio de Janeiro.
The Monobloco workshop operates in a theater in Rio de Janeiro. The intention is to teach people without any musical initiation to play percussion instruments. It starts in April and only ends at carnival.
The students of the workshop, along with the teachers, form a battery of 120 people that performs every year during the four Fridays that precede the carnival at Fundição Progresso. These parties serve as a rehearsal for the parade. The parties attract an audience of approximately four thousand people per night.
The carnival group – created in 2000 by the group Pedro Luís and A Parede – began as a workshop with the intention of teaching batucada. At the end of the first year the group made a parade in Rio de Janeiro and became official as a block. The differential of the group has always been to use samba school instruments to play other rhythms besides samba, such as marchinha, coco, funk, xote, ciranda and charm.
Since its creation, every year, on the Sunday after the carnival, the block comes out with the full drums, commanded by maestro Celso Alvim. Initially the parades were held on Leblon and Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro, but in 2007 they were transferred to Copacabana because of the large number of people it attracted.
In 2007 the block brought together 40,000 people in Copacabana, in 2008 there were 200,000 and in 2009, at the request of the city hall, the block was transferred to the city center where it attracted a crowd of 400,000, making Monobloc the second block in audience at the city’s carnival…
