Geraldo Azevedo de Amorim (Petrolina, January 11, 1945) is a Brazilian composer, singer and guitarist. He is known for successes such as ‘White Day’, ‘Táxi Lunar’ and ‘Dona da Minha Cabeça’ and for important partnerships with Zé Ramalho, Alceu Valença and Elba Ramalho. Geraldo is one of the greatest artists of Brazilian popular music, with strong expression and contribution to northeastern music, uniting rhythms such as frevo, forró, xote, maracatu and baião in his songs. Excellent self-taught, he has been a guitarist since he was five years old.
Geraldo Azevedo de Amorim was born in Petrolina, Pernambuco, in the Jatobá neighborhood (then rural area of the city), on the edge of the São Francisco River. He lived with music from his first years of life: his mother, Dona Nenzinha, a teacher, sang and promoted cultural events at the school that worked in his own home; in these events, at the age of four, Geraldo already sang and performed.
At the age of five, he won his first guitar (coated by his father, José Amorim) and inspired by the family, he risks the first chords. Later, in adolescence, with the emergence of bossa nova, Geraldo is enchanted by the music of João Gilberto, and starts to study guitar more hard, even attending balls just to observe and learn new harmonies with
His musical career also begins in Petrolina, when he is invited to work with Reinaldo Belo on a rock program at the city’s broadcaster. Soon the first Petrolina radio is created, Rural Broadcaster “A Voz do São Francisco”, where Geraldo is invited to present the program “Por Falar em Bossa Nova”; years later, he is called to join the Sambossa group…
